House Director

Position Overview | Live-In Position

We are seeking a qualified and professional House Director to oversee the daily operations of a collegiate chapter house. This individual resides in the facility and serves as an on-site representative, ensuring the safety, functionality, and positive living experience of all residents.

The House Director must communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including undergraduate members, volunteers, staff, vendors, and university partners. This role requires strong organizational skills, discretion, sound judgment, and the ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations.

Housing-related benefits (such as room, board, utilities, internet, and laundry access) are typically included. Compensation varies by location and scope of responsibility.

Primary Responsibilities

Residential & Operational Management

  • Reside in the chapter house and maintain an active on-site presence

  • Ensure adherence to all house rules, policies, and safety procedures

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the facility, including coordination with vendors, contractors, and service providers

  • Serve as a visible, approachable resource for residents in a professional and supportive manner

  • Open and close the facility at the beginning and end of academic terms, including documentation of damages and needed repairs

Vendor Oversight

  • Coordinate vendor services and monitor the quality of work performed

  • Obtain and review bids for maintenance and repair projects as required

Financial & Administrative Duties

  • Operate within an established budget and monitor expenses

  • Review invoices related to kitchen, maintenance, and facility operations

  • Prepare expense summaries or reports for leadership review

  • Maintain accurate records, inventories, and documentation

Safety, Security & Maintenance

  • Respond to safety, security, and maintenance emergencies as needed

  • Monitor building security systems, cameras, keys, and access controls

  • Conduct regular property inspections to identify safety or maintenance concerns

  • Maintain confidential emergency contact information for residents

  • Coordinate room inspections and track condition reports for move-in and move-out

Communication & Relationship Management

  • Maintain regular communication with house leadership and governing boards

  • Provide timely updates regarding facility conditions, staff matters, and operational needs

  • Foster positive working relationships with university representatives, neighbors, vendors, and other House Directors

  • Welcome parents, guests, and visitors during key events

Health & Wellness Oversight

  • Stay informed on public health guidelines and institutional recommendations

  • Support and implement food safety, cleaning, and health protocols

  • Assist with contingency planning related to communicable illnesses or other health concerns

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age requirement (typically 25+)

  • Valid driver’s license and insured personal vehicle

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and email communication

  • Ability to perform routine physical tasks (lifting, stairs, walking, inspections)

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with college students or in a residential setting

  • Previous House Director or similar live-in management experience

  • Supervisory or staff management experience
