Fraternity Description

The Kappa Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho (AGR) is a social-professional fraternity situated on the East Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Established in 1917, the chapter maintains strong ties to Nebraska's agricultural community and a nationwide network of alumni. The chapter’s current house was built in 2013 and is designed to support the academic, social, and professional development of its members. Alpha Gamma Rho promotes leadership in agricultural sciences, natural resources, and related fields while encouraging excellence in social, mental, and moral achievements.

Role Description

The Fraternity House Director is a full-time, live-in role based in Lincoln, NE, at the Kappa Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho. The position serves as a positive and supportive presence for undergraduate members, providing mentorship, guidance, and helping maintain a stable, welcoming living environment for young men as they transition into college.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: 

The duties and responsibilities below are a general outline and not to be considered inclusive. The House Director shall report to the AGR Executive Team & AGR Alumni Board with any questions about the policies, regulations, or expectations. The AGR Executive Team & AGR Alumni Board may from time to time request other reasonable duties to be performed as the need dictates. The House Director must be prepared to assist and be present for any unforeseen circumstances which may cause the abrupt closing of the house.

Safety and Health

1.     Work to develop and maintain a safety-consciousness working and living environment with Chapter members.

2.     Be familiar with local fire code requirements and other emergency procedures and maintain a list of emergency contacts (including the University and city/county police, fire, medical, and counseling services) in a convenient location. 

3.     Schedule life safety inspections as requested and required. 

4.     Promptly report to the Alumni Board and Property Manager any problems with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, alarm system or any other security or safety risk, including fire hazards. 

5.     Perform a security check of the Chapter House before retiring. Such checks entail securing (closing) all doors to the kitchen and main-floor doors, checking the fireplace, and shutting off lights. 

6.     Ensure the house is safe and locked securely and that entrances and hallways are always unobstructed. 

7.     Perform two random, daily walk-throughs (daylight and dark) of the main floor and basement--including both the interior and exterior of the property--to review any safety or maintenance-related needs. (extinguished lighting, broken or cracked pavement, etc.) 

8.     Know the AGR’s protocol for responding to critical incidents and file appropriate documentation/incident reports to the Alumni Board/Property Management Company. 

9.     Become familiar with and oversee compliance with student safety protocol required or recommended by the University, such as those outlined in resources provided by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority life or the Dean’s Office.

House Maintenance/Housekeeping: 

1.     Become knowledgeable about the house, furnishings, equipment, and grounds. 

2.     Promptly report any mechanical failures, required repairs, and equipment needs to the Operations Executive Member and/or the Alumni Board. 

3.     Meet with and observe vendors who are on site for maintenance issues as may be requested by the Property Manager or active chapter. 

4.     Confer regularly with the House Manager and/or Alumni Board to exchange ideas and recommendations on house operations, including house maintenance responsibilities of the chapter and safety procedures. 

5.     During the summer months when school is not in session, the House Director shall be available to observe and assist with coordination of any necessary repairs or maintenance, scheduled by the Property Manager. 

6.     Ensure the standards of housekeeping are followed and encourage careful upkeep of the house and property, with an emphasis on the public areas of the house and grounds. 

7.     Perform and maintain an annual inventory of all house furnishings, cooking utensils and equipment, miscellaneous kitchen items, flatware, glassware, china, silver, and other items (that are not the personal property of the Chapter members) and provide this inventory to the Executive Team.  

Food Service Management: 

1.     Assist with planning of food for special occasions. Assist with the food/dining room preparation for these occasions.  

2.     Assist the Kitchen Management Company with security of the kitchen, equipment, and food items. Supervise residents who require access to the kitchen (or ensure they are escorted by the Cook). Ensure the kitchen is locked following the noon and evening meals and unlocked for breakfast. 

3.     Communicate with the kitchen management team to maintain the kitchen inventory of silverware, dishes, glassware, and serving utensils, plates, bowls etc. 

Opening and Closing of Chapter House: 

1.     Coordinate with the AGR Executive Team & AGR Alumni Board for preparation of the house for opening at the beginning of the school year and after relevant school-year breaks. 

2.     Be present at the house on each opening day to greet students and parents and aid as needed. 

3.     Maintain a set of keys and/or access codes to all doors. 

Home-like Atmosphere: 

1.     Be responsible for creating a pleasant home-like atmosphere, maintaining standards of good taste and cooperating in every way to promote the welfare of Chapter members both in residence and living elsewhere. 

2.     Become familiar with campus and community health, safety, and welfare services and resources available to members for professional help or guidance. 

3.     Promote the use of good manners and proper etiquette not only by example, but also through frequent, formal, and informal discussions on these and related topics with the general membership. 

4.     Refrain from acting as a disciplinarian or be involved with the internal business of the Chapter. As an employee of the house, problems that arise regarding the facility and its operations are to be discussed only with the Noble Ruler and the Property Manager. Problems with the Chapter, or its individual members, are to be discussed with the Chapter Advisors. 

5.     Maintain in strict confidence the workings of the Chapter and Fraternity as well as their social affairs and those of the members. 

6.     Eat at least one meal a day with the residents, encouraging a friendly and engaging atmosphere. 

Social Functions

1.     Assist the Activities Executives or other appropriate Chapter Executives, as requested, in the planning of social functions to be held at the Chapter house. 

2.     Attend social functions at the Chapter House as requested by the Chapter or Alumni. 

3.     Meet and welcome guests to the house, including parents, alumni and volunteers. 

Alcohol, Smoking, and Social Conduct

1.     Be knowledgeable of all local house rules as well as Organization/University policies on alcohol, drugs, visitation, and social conduct. Observe and comply with the same. 

2.     Do not allow alcohol and illegal and illicit drugs on the property at any time. 

3.     Document and report violations of these rules immediately to the Noble Ruler and Chapter Advisors. 

4.     Set the best possible example for the Chapter members. 

General Guidelines

1.     Establish regular and standard hours of availability. During these hours, the House Director is expected to be available and welcoming to Chapter members. If the House Director must be absent during these hours, a note should be left on the House Director’s door advising the time of return. 

2.     Provide information about the length of absence should the House Director need to be away from the house for an extended period. The location of the House Director’s whereabouts will also need to be provided so the House Director can be contacted in the event of an emergency. This information should be posted on the apartment door. 

3.     Do not enter any contracts for goods or services on behalf of the Chapter or Alumni Board. 

4.     Ensure that any guests of the House Director abide by the rules and regulations of our facility while on site. 

5.     Part-time jobs outside the house are acceptable for this role, but hours should be discussed with the Active Chapter as well as the Alumni Board.

Qualifications: 

1.     Previous experience as a facility manager or house director is beneficial. 

2.     Ability to communicate effectively with members, the Property Manager, and vendors.

3.     Must have the ability to endure the physical demands of managing a property. This includes standing for long periods of time, bending, climbing stairs, and walking distances.
